Number of Years it Take to Study Law in Nigeria
Law is a course that requires comprehensive study and knowledge of the native law and court procedures to practice. Every country has its own requirements and number of years for law study before full practice. Nigeria has a 5year compulsory requirements to study law in the university. During this study, candidates will be required to concentrate on 12 compulsory law courses and they are spread over the 5 years of study.
After the 5 years of study in any Nigerian university, graduates from different faculties of law will be admitted in the Nigerian Law school to study the practical aspect of the Nigerian legal system for just one year. There are different law schools in Nigeria into which candidates will be posted.
Finally, after graduating from the Nigerian law school, candidates will do their NYSC for 1 year before they will be fully certified to practice law in Nigeria.
In all, becoming a lawyer in Nigeria takes 7 years. First 5 years will be spent in any accredited law faculty in Nigeria, then the remaining two years is for the Nigerian law school and NYSC (Youth service) respectively.

Is it possible to study law without going to the Nigerian Law School?
No! It is not possible to study law in Nigeria without going to the Nigerian Law School. The Nigerian Law school is where the native and practical aspects of the Nigerian Legal system is taught. So even if anyone studies abroad, it is compulsory that he/she must attend any of the Nigerian Law School to practice law in Nigeria.
In addition to that, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has stated that studying law in Nigeria requires a complete knowledge of how the Nigerian legal system works, thus, it is not ideal to practice without going to the Nigerian law school.

There’s only one law school with multiple campuses. Also, you can study law at the University without attending the law school. The caveat is that you cannot practice law in Nigeria or be called a lawyer without passing through law school and being called to Nigerian Bar.
