Can i combine WAEC and NECO result for admission?
Yes! It is possible to combine both WAEC and NECO results for admission into any university, polytechnic or college of education in Nigeria. Both WAEC and NECO results are valid in Nigeria. WAEC particularly, is an international examination body that is recognized by the government of Nigeria. Accordingly, NECO is a national examination body that is also recognized by the government.
In applying for admission into any institution in Nigeria, both WAEC and NECO result is allowed at the same time. What this means is that, aspirants can combine both WAEC and NECO result to gain admission into any institution in Nigeria. This is known as two sitting results. So, you can use two sittings results for admission in Nigeria currently.
Nevertheless, you must also note that not every university accepts combination of both WAEC and NECO result. Some schools accept it, but they don’t allow such combination for top courses like medicine, law, engineering etc.
Thus if you are asking whether you can combine WAEC and NECO results to study medicine, law, engineering, economics, pharmacy, etc in any institution in Nigeria, you have to check the admission requirements for that particular school you wish to gain admission.
For instance, UI accept two sittings result for all their courses except Medicine and some other science courses.
How to combine WAEC and NECO results for admission
To combine your WAEC and NECO results for admission into any institution in Nigeria, you must make good grades in any one of the two results. You are required to have a Credit (C) grade to supplement the subjects you failed in the other result. To explain this further, I will give you an instance below.
Take for instance: If Mr. Samuel Edeh, a law aspirant of UNN, has the following grades:
English Language: C
Mathematics: F
Government: B
Literature in English: C
Economics: B
Apparently, this WAEC result is not eligible to apply for admission into any Nigerian institution because Mr. Samuel Edeh failed mathematics. To make it eligible, Mr Samuel must combine it with a NECO result that has at least a Credit (C) in mathematics. The Credit in NECO will increase the one in WAEC mathematics.
Now, when applying for admission, there is usually a place to enter two sittings results in the form. All that is required is for Mr. Samuel to enter his two results there.

Universities that Don’t Accept Combined Results
Combinations of results are not accepted by all universities. Although most colleges accept both of these test results for admission, some can demand consistency or favour one over the other. Prospective students must make sure they meet the standards by carefully researching the admissions policies of the universities they are interested in. Different institutional guidelines, geographical preferences, or academic requirements may all have an impact on this diversity in admission policies. The universities listed below don’t recognise combined grades for specific courses.
1. University of Lagos (UNILAG): A combination of WAEC and NECO results may not be recognised for admission to several courses at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), one of the Nigerian universities with unique entrance requirements.
Prospective students interested in UNILAG programmes must thoroughly go over the entrance requirements and make sure they fulfil the stated exam requirements. It is clear from this that the university is dedicated to upholding strict academic standards and uniform admissions procedures.
2. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU): Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has an established reputation for academic excellence, which is demonstrated by the admissions standards it has for specific programmes. As with other respectable universities, OAU might not accept combined WAEC and NECO scores for a certain programme. Applicants who are interested in attending OAU should carefully review the admission requirements to make sure they meet the prerequisites for the courses they want to take.
To increase their prospects of being admitted to OAU and taking advantage of its prestigious academic atmosphere, this attention to detail is essential.
3. University of Ibadan (UI): The University of Ibadan (UI) upholds strict admissions standards, particularly for courses that reject a combination of WAEC and NECO scores. This illustrates the university’s dedication to high standards in the classroom and its uniformity in assessing potential pupils. To increase their chances of being admitted to this esteemed Nigerian institution, applicants aiming to enrol in UI should carefully review the admission requirements for the courses they choose to pursue and make sure they meet the required exam requirements.
4. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN): The University of Ilorin’s commitment to academic achievement is fundamental to its character, and this includes its admissions procedures. Particularly, certain highly sought-after UNILORIN courses do not recognise a combination of WAEC and NECO test scores, instead preferring homogeneity. Applicants considering these programmes should carefully review UNILORIN’s admission standards to make sure they meet the school’s unique testing requirements. For individuals who aspire to become a part of the UNILORIN community and start fulfilling academic careers in fields like law and medicine, this attention to detail is essential.
