About The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT)
The East Central State of Nigeria Edict No. 10 of 1973, issued by the East Central State Administrator, Ajie Ukpabi Asika, gave rise to the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu. Before this magnificent institution was founded, there was the Institute of Administration, which provided various grades of brief in-service training; the College of Technology, which provided courses in Engineering and Laboratory Technology leading to the Ordinary Diploma; and the Co-operative College, which provided a certificate programme in Co-operative Studies to Ministry of Co-operative Inspectors. These institutions were independent and in various locations. The Ministry of Education oversaw and was a part of the College of Technology. The Institute of Administration was under the Ministry of Establishments, and the Ministry of Rural Development had direct supervision over the Co-operative College.
Civil workers employed by the Ministry and subject to re-posting to other departments or units based on the Civil Service’s requirements manned each of these institutions.
The East Central State Administrator established a Provisional Council in October of that year, tasked with identifying and advising the government on a suitable organisation of independent, technical, professional, and managerial personnel in the areas specified by the state and federal needs. With much energy, the Council worked on its assignment and early in April 1973, they turned in a report. The Edict No. 10 of 1973, also known as “The Institute of Management and Technology Edict 1973,” was thus issued on May 31, 1973. The Edict took effect 1 June 1973, thus founding has now become known as the Institute of Management and Technology. Prof. M.O Chijioke took the helm of affairs as the Polytechnic’s first Rector while Mr B.O Akwukwuma was the first registrar respectively.
