Problems with The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT)
As you consider IMT as your destination of choice, a consideration of the disadvantage merits a discussion. This is not to discourage any potential candidate but to discuss the problems that follow the operations of this institutions which include IMT. These are problems that have become a persistent thorn in the side of these institutes and merit the attention of the Government if Polytechnics are to truly flourish.
1. BSC v HND Dichotomy: Graduates with a HND which is the certificate granted upon completion of the programmes offered by a polytechnic still is not treated with the same respect as their peers with a degree. They are often denied employment by private companies, do not get promoted at the same speed and even have a lower ceiling in Government institutions compared to their degree holding counterparts.
This has led to youths treating the idea of attending a polytechnic with contempt because it is seen as a limiter on future career goals. Unfortunately it has acquired a stigma that people who attend Polytechnic are unable to attend a university due to inability to compete. This stereotype is untrue as the aim of a Polytechnic is not to compete with degree holders. It is to provide an alternative for individuals to get practical hands on experience especially when compared to the model it was created to emulate, the Masachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Polytechnics should be a leader in ground breaking technology and its applications in Nigeria and not a perceived dumping ground for dullards.
2. Admission Requirements: Though IMT and other polytechnics are were created as technical colleges. The criteria to get admission does not help to stave off the stereotypes affecting Polytechnics. Students apply to Universites and when do not get in they simply switch to polytechnics as they think it will be easier due to its low Jamb requirements.
This is wrong because even a technical college requires a healthy grasp of the theoritical aspect of any subject for the safety of the student and to ensure a healthy foundation. Whoever seeks admission into a polytechnic like IMT should be sure that this is what he wants and not simply as an insurance after attempting admission into a University.
