Interesting Facts About LASU
As at 2023, the Lagos State University has an estimated number of 61,000 students in its different programmes of both full-time and part-time.
Also, it is among the most turbulent Universities in the country, with constant staff and student agitations. For instance, there was a tussle between the Vice Chancellor and the different unions of staff as well as the protests for school fee (that have ended).
So, LASU was closed as a result of the face-off.
However, the situation at this University certainly calls for urgent action among all stakeholders in the sector of education. It got to a level that one is tempted to suggest that Anezi Okoro probably had LASU in mind when he wrote his famous book titled “One Week One Trouble”.
At that time, news about LASU was for the wrong reasons and its state of affairs sharply negates the dreams and aspirations of the founding fathers.
However, LASU has helped in nurturing and producing new crop of future leaders (even though is was later turned into a theatre of the absurd).
Years ago, LASU used to be notorious for the activity of cultism which was then quite rampant among some of the students. At that time, it was usual to see different cult groups engage in fierce and bloody gun duel (sometimes in broad daylight).
Typically, this was usually followed by serious commotion. It often spreads into the adjoining communities with consequent disruption of socio-economic activities.
At a time, things got so bad that an Armoured Personnel Tank had to be stationed permanently at the entrance of LASU with fierce-looking armed security personnel so as to constantly monitor people and events around the school.
However, today, admission in LASU is so competitive. This is because of the larger population of students in the school.
As at 2023, its school fees is less than hundred thousand naira, but does not have facilities for accommodation. It has good structures and good roads.
