Brief History of Delta State University (DELSU)
History indicates that Delta State University, Abraka was historically a Centre of Education. In the colonial era and for a few years into the post-colonial era, it was founded as the Government Teachers’ Training College. From 1971 to 1985, it was recognised as a College of Education and granted the Nigerian Certificate of Education (N.C.E.).
It began offering degree programmes in 1981 after becoming associated with the University of Benin, Benin City. This continued until 1985 when it changed its name to the Faculty of Education of the then-Bendel State University, which had its main campus located in Ekpoma.
The establishment of an independent Delta State University, Abraka on April 30, 1992, by the then-executive governor of the state, Olorogun Felix Ibru, was made necessary by the August 1991 creation of Edo and Delta State as well as the December 1991 conversion of the main campus of the former Bendel State University, Ekpoma to become Edo State University.
The Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of the Social Sciences were the five faculties that Delta State University, Abraka first had.
The State Government established a policy in 1995 mandating that the three campuses be dispersed throughout the State’s three senatorial districts. Three campuses—the main campus in Abraka, the Anwai campus in Asaba, and the Oleh campuses—were constructed in light of this strategy.
