This is to inform the general public that the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has finally release her departmental cutoff marks for 2024/2025 academic session. Notice on the just released UNICAL departmental cutoff marks was made via the University’s official website (@ www.unical.edu.ng.)

In light of this information, aspirants who applied for admission into the prestigious University of Calabar (UNICAL) should endeavor to check the departmental cutoff marks stipulated by the university below.

If you do not know what UNICAL departmental cutoff marks are; note that they are the minimum score stipulated by the management of UNICAL for admitting students into the various departments in the university.

Is UNICAL 2024/2025 Departmental Cutoff Marks Out?

Currently, the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has not yet released her 2024/2025 departmental cutoff marks. In light of that, i encourage every student who applied for admission in the University of Calabar to stay calm and keep checking this website from time to time. The cutoff marks will be published here as soon as the university releases them.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Students who applied for admission at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) are to note that the University is currently a part of the ongoing ASUU strike. On this note, UNICAL may not release her departmental cutoff marks until the strike is finally over.

Also, based on the strike, which has stopped school activities in the university for quite some time and made it impossible for students to move to upper levels, the University may consider increasing her cutoff marks this year so that less amount of students will eventually be offered admission.

UNICAL General Cutoff Mark For Admission 

The general cutoff mark of the institution is 150. Consequently, candidates that didn’t score, at least, 150 in their JAMB UTME are not allowed to take the school’s POST UTME screening.

HOW TO CALCULATE UNICAL AGGREGATE SCORE

For those that do not know how to calculate their UNICAL Cutoff mark, this section is for you. Below I will explain how you can calculate UNICAL post UTME aggregate for 2024 . Meanwhile, it is important to note that both JAMB UTME and Post UTME score actually contributes to UNICAL aggregate, and they are both 50%.

Conversely, to calculate UNICAL post UTME aggregate, divide your JAMB score by 8 and keep the answer.

Secondly, divide your Post UTME score by 2 and keep the answer.

Now, add the results of the two calculations above and that is your aggregate for the year. To explain this further, I will use an instance.

So, take for instance, if Emeka participatedu in the just concluded JAMB UTME and UNICAL post UTME examination, having 250 in JAMB and 70 in post UTME examination, below are the steps to calculate his aggregate:

1. First is to divide his JAMB score by 8. Which will be 250/8 = 31.25%. 
2. Secondly is to divide his Post UTME score by 2 which will be 70/2 = 36.5%.
3. Finally, Emeka’s aggregate will be the sum of the first and second step above, which will be 31.25% + 36.5% = 67.75%.

Is it possible to my change course in UNICAL to another course?

The answer is absolutely yes! The University of Calabar (UNICAL) allows you to change your course if it is necessary to do so. To apply for the change of course form, one will have to wait to the university opens the window for it. This is usually for those who feel that their cutoff mark is too low so they want to change to another course.

What to do if you have a low cutoff mark

This is one of the important questions students that slightly didn’t meet the cutoff marks above ask currently. The answer is simply to do nothing.

It is imperative to know that, as a federal government owned institution, UNICAL also uses the quota system when offering admission based on cutoff marks.

Thus, irrespective of the cutoff marks above, the school will consider candidates under Merit, Locality and Educational less developed states as follows: Merit has 45% of this list, 35% and 20% goes to Locality and EDLs respectively.

More so, if your think your cutoff mark is far lower that the one mentioned above, it is better you quickly change your institution through JAMB change of course and institution form. Alternatively, you can change your course to any other course that fits the subjects you took during post UTME screening.

UNICAL 2024/2025 Admission Requirements For UTME Candidates 

To be offered admission into the University of Calabar (UNICAL) through UTME, UNICAL don’t only consider the aggregate score of candidates. Below are the requirements for admission in UNICAL:

• Candidates must score up to 180 in JAMB UTME examination.
• UTME candidates must take UNICAL 2024 post UTME screening and must pass the examination with good score (depending on the course you applied in the university).
• Candidate must have at least five (5) credits including English and Mathematics in their O’level result.
• Candidates must make the University of Calabar their first choose when apply for admission.
• Candidates must have attained the age of 16 to be offered admission into UNICAL.

Interesting Things About The University of Calabar (UNICAL) You Should Know

1. Their students have names to distinguish their genders: The term “Malabite” is one of the most often-used nicknames for male students at UNICAL. The words “Malabo“—the former name of Equatorial Guinea’s capital—and “Bite”—a slang word for students—have been combined to create this moniker. This moniker is said to have started in the 1980s when a group of UNICAL students took part in a program of cultural exchange with students from Equatorial Guinea.

Male UNICAL students have since been referred to as Malabites thanks to the enduring nickname. “Gentlemen” is another common moniker used at UNICAL for male students. “Malabress” is a well-liked moniker among female students at UNICAL. This name is a combination of the nicknames “Malabite” (for male students) and “Dress” (for female students’ attire). “Queens” is another moniker in UNICAL for female students.

2. The university has produced famous graduates: Some of the most well-known graduates have graduated from the University of Calabar over the years. Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Kate Henshaw, Uche Jombo, Florence Obi, an academic, novelist, and professor, and the university’s eleventh substantive vice chancellor of University of Calabar, Chile Eboe-Osuji, an international lawyer and former president of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, the Netherlands; Nelson Enwerem, well known as Prince; a model, television personality, and Mr. Nigeria 2018 winner; and a past contestant on Big Brother Naija; are just a few.

3. It occupies a 17-hectare site: The university’s existing campus is located on a 17-hectare tract in the ancient city of Calabar Municipal, which has a long history of cultural interchange with the west, between the Great Qua River and the Calabar River on the eastern side of the town. More land has been obtained on both banks of the Great Qua River to build the University. The university derives enormous delight from serving as a significant intellectual custodian of the vibrant culture of the people.

4. It was ranked 5th best university in Nigeria by Ad Scientific Index: According to the AD Scientific Index, a reputable global rating organization with its headquarters in Turkey, the University of Calabar, UNICAL, was recognized as the fifth-best university in Nigeria in 2021.

Prof. Florence Banku Obi, the University of Calabar’s Vice-Chancellor, received the ranking eight months after taking office. UI, UNN, and UNILORIN were ranked as the top three universities in Nigeria in the list of 2021 “World Scientists and University Rankings” based on the caliber of its scientists.
